The Mission

The Thesis

Early stage pricing, late stage derisking. By utilizing the data obtained from government backed grant programs, we are able to invest in companies that have already shown some proven efficacy, and the ability to solve a US government need. This ensures that there is not only an end buyer, but also some proven money invested on the front end via SBIR/STTR grants.

SBIR/STTR

The SBA backed SBIR/STTR programs offer staged grants to companies that are actively trying to solve a government need. These grants are broken down into three phases. Phase 1 provides a seed grant for proof of concept, Phase 2 provides a larger grant for R&D and prototype, and Phase 3 allows the grantee to be awarded a sole-sourced contract from the US Government. S2 invests between stage 2 and 3, after the Phase 1 & 2 grant money has been given, but before a government contract has been rewarded.

Opportunity

By the time grantees reach Phase 3, they are no longer awarded government money, and need to seek capital investment to continue their growth. They often are lacking in resources or knowledge to obtain that funding, and that’s where S2 steps in. By investing holistically into the companies at this stage, we are able to not only infuse needed capital, but also expertise that is needed to healthily scale, reach additional investment, and secure government contracts that would be the groundwork for the company’s future success.
